This past Saturday, July 6th, we celebrated the 102nd anniversary of World Co-operative Day, a testament to the enduring power and impact of the co-operative model. With over 3 million co-operatives worldwide, representing at least 12% of humanity, we stand united in our mission to build a better future for all.
In Malta, the celebration of this significant day took place at the Hilton Hotel. The event brought together co-operatives from across the islands, showcasing the strength and solidarity of our local co-operative community. Sponsored by the Central Cooperative Fund and held in collaboration with Koperattivi Malta, Malta’s Apex Organisation, and the Malta Co-operative Federation (MCF), the gathering was a vibrant testament to the cooperative spirit.
We extend our gratitude to Hon. Silvio Schembri, Minister for the Economy, Enterprise, and Strategic Projects, Hon. Robert Cutajar MP, Opposition Spokesperson for Co-operatives, and Mr. Joseph Abela, Chairperson of the Co-operatives Board, for their insightful speeches. A special video message from Mr. Ariel Guarco, President of the International Co-operative Alliance, highlighted the global significance of the Co-operative Model.
A highlight of the event was the presentation of two Masters Theses. Ms. Melania Apap presented her research on “The Application of the Co-operative Concept in Malta,” and Capt. Terence Farrugia shared his analysis titled “An Analysis of Organisational Values Management in Maltese Co-operatives and its Impact on the Co-operative Life Cycle.” Their insightful findings sparked an engaging panel discussion led by Dr. Luke Dalli, Chairperson of the Central Cooperative Fund, with contributions from Dr. Oliver Frendo, Vice-President of Koperattivi Malta, Dr. David Fabri, former Head of the Departments of Commercial Law and Visiting Senior Lecturer at the University of Malta, and Mr. John Malli, representative of MCF.
As a special touch, souvenirs from one of Koperattivi Malta’s member cooperatives, Koperattiva Għasel Malti, were provided to all attendees. Each participant received a jar of honey accompanied by a traditional honey dipper, adding a sweet note to the celebration.
The day was a celebration of our shared achievements and a reflection on the power of cooperation. It underscored the significant role co-operatives play in fostering community, driving sustainable development, and creating inclusive economies.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to all co-operative members who attended and made this occasion truly special. Your dedication and commitment are the bedrock of our community, and together, we continue to build a better world. As we look forward to the future, let us remember that through cooperation and shared values, we can achieve remarkable things. Here’s to the continued success of co-operatives everywhere and the bright future we are building together, for all.
Join us in celebrating the power of cooperation and showing the world what we can achieve together.
